History of the Club by Judy Jones
The Colonial Nature Photography Club began in 2007, inspired by founder Ken Conger’s travels across Virginia to present photography programs. After speaking to clubs from Richmond to Northern Virginia, Ken realized that Williamsburg not only deserved a similar group but also had a strong community of natureminded photographers who would welcome it. He reached out to local photographers, and the first meeting was held that November at the Williamsburg Regional Library, with six people in attendance. The club’s first seven members were Ken Conger, Barbara Houston, Steve Devan, Joe Piotroski, Joe Heyman, Don Snyder, and Jose Hernandez.
That initial gathering focused on gauging interest in forming a club dedicated specifically to nature photography rather than commercial work. With enthusiasm clearly present, the club officially took root.
Ken volunteered to serve as the first president. Early outreach included contacting local photographers—both those he knew personally and those he met online—as well as visitors who stopped by his booth at art shows. Membership grew quickly: by 2008 the club had nearly 30 members, and by 2010 membership had grown to about 60.
Leadership continued to strengthen the club’s momentum. In 2008, Steve Devan was elected president and worked to bring in talented presenters while keeping the club organized and thriving. In 2010, under president Dane Clingan, the club launched its Facebook page, expanding its visibility and connection to the broader community.
Membership continued to grow steadily over the years. Strong programming has always been—and remains—the cornerstone of the club’s success. Securing highquality, informative, and innovative speakers has been essential to sustaining interest and engagement.
Today, as the club enters its 19th year, it looks forward to many more years of fostering skills, creativity, camaraderie, and success among local nature photographers.
